Chief  Edwin E. Wood, III (Retired)

Medford Department of Public Safety, Division of Police

 

 

Chief Edwin Empson Wood III began his career with the Medford Township Police Division in 1973 as a member of the Police Cadet program under the tutelage of then Sgt. Steven McGarvey.  On March 1, 1974 he was appointed as a Full-time SLEO, and on February 1, 1975 he was appointed as a full-time Patrolman.  He was promoted to the rank of Sergeant on July 1, 1985, and subsequently to Detective Sergeant First Class on July 1, 1992.  On September 2, 1998 he was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant, and assigned as the Criminal Bureau Commander.  Promoted to the rank of Captain on March 13, 2001 he assumed the responsibilities as agency Executive Officer, in charge of the day-to-day operations of the Police Division.  On October 1, 2002 he was promoted to the rank of Chief of Police/Director of Public Safety, where he assumed responsibility for the Police, Fire, EMS, and Emergency Management agencies of Medford Township. 

During his career Chief Wood served in numerous bureaus within the Police Division, including Patrol, Criminal, Firearms, and Administration.  He served for many years as a member of the Medford Township and Burlington County Special Response teams.  He was very influential in the implementation of the COPSMORE grant, which has evolved into one of the largest multi-jurisdictional law enforcement records management systems in the United States.  As Chief he chaired the NJ State Association of Chiefs of Police Operation Childsafe program, as well as served as Treasurer and Vice President of the Burlington County Association of Chiefs of Police.  A 1973 graduate of Lenape High School, and Burlington County College, Chief Wood was a graduate of the FBI National Academy, 219th Session in Quantico, Virginia.

Chief Wood also served a President of the Medford Township Police Officers Association, and President of the Superior Officers Association.  He served for ten years as Secretary of South Jersey Lodge # 56, Fraternal Order of Police, also serving as a State Delegate.  He was very active in the Masonic Order, and was a member of Medford Lodge # 178 Free and Accepted Masons serving as its Worshipful Master in 1988, and an honorary member of Columbia Lodge # 44 F & A.M. in Miamitown, Ohio, the lodge of his father and grandfather.  He served as Secretary to the Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of New Jersey, Free and Accepted Masons, during 1993-94, and served on the Grand Lodge Appeals and Grievance Committee from 1994 to the present.  He was a 32nd degree Mason as well as a Shriner.

Chief Wood is survived by his bride Marguerite, and sister Sharon of Long Island, New York.
